Questions about the Arts Administration Program
Contract All | Expand All

Is the program appropriate for my interest to manage any arts discipline?
Yes. Each year we accept students interested in managing orchestras, theatres, operas, dance companies and museums. Our program is specifially designed for those who want to work in the management of the arts.
Can I take classes that count towards the degree before I begin the program?
Generally no. The Arts Administration program course sequence is designed to allow the students to gain information that builds from one class to the next. There is little flexibility in the course sequencing and students may usually not take classes out of sequence. However, the COB requires an undergraduate business calculus course as a prerequisite.  That course may (and should) be taken in advance.
Are there any prerequisites required for the MA/MBA program?
The MBA program has a prerequisite of an undergraduate business calculus course. We highly recommend you fulfill this requirement before you begin your program at UC. The requirement includes an undergraduate business calculus class from a local university or college. You may also take an online course through the following online college: www.canyoncollege.edu; go to business courses and scroll down and select BU320 Business Calculus. Everything is online including payment for the class, and ordering the text for the course.
I'm an international student, how do the admissions requirements differ?
International students should complete all required application materials by the Feb. 15 deadline.  They must also comply with University application guidelines for international students.
Is it too late to apply?
The early application deadline is December 1; the final deadline is February 1. If necessary, some required official application materials such as the GMAT or GRE scores may be sent soon after those dates.  After reviewing the applications, the Arts Administration faculty will request interviews in Cincinnati for qualified applicants. In cases where distance and cost are prohibitive, phone interviews may be substituted, though there are distinct advantages to the student with the live interview.
When do classes begin?
Classes begin in late September and end in early June.   Students complete an 8-10 week internship at an arts organization of their choice over the summer.   MA candidates finish their coursework in March and then complete the final internship during the spring quarter.  MBA/MA candidates finish coursework in early June and then complete their second internship during the summer months.
Can I take start the program at a time other than September?
No. The Arts Administration program course sequence is designed to allow the students to gain information that builds from one class to the next. There is little flexibility in the course sequencing and students may usually not take classes out of sequence.  That sequencing begins in September.
How much will it cost?
The University determines the cost of tuition.  A high percentage of Arts Administration students are granted University Graduate Scholarships, which cover the majority (approx 85%) of the tuition.  Many of the students selected to the Arts Administration program also receive graduate assistantships which adequately pay students for working 20 hours per week within various offices at the College.  More information about these scholarships and other UC Financial Aid is available through CCM Financial Information
How do the requirements differ for the MA and the MBA/MA degree?
The MA in Arts Administration is completed in two years (seven quarters) of fulltime study.   The MBA/MA in Arts Administration takes two years (eight quarters) to complete.  Dual degree candidates take additional classes at the College of Business throughout the two years.
I currently have a job. Can I be in the program part-time?
Not if your job is full time.  The Arts Administration Program accepts 8-10 students per year who must study full-time.  The nature of the coursework and class times requires full-time status.  Many of our students are able to work part-time within the College or at arts organizations in Cincinnati.  Due to the rigorous academics of the program, it is not recommended that students work more than 20 hour per week.
Should I apply to both the MBA/MA programs?
In short, yes. Although it is not required that you apply to both programs, most students in the MA program decide to pursue the MBA program upon arriving at UC. To save you extra time and effort, we recommend you apply to the dual degree.
How selective is the program?
The CCM Arts Administration program accepts 8-10 students per year.  Great emphasis is placed on individual attention and developing the potential of each student.  The program tends to give priority to applicants who display previous experience in the field of arts administration, whether it is a career, part-time, internship, or structured volunteering. It is not enough to have a background in the performing arts; the ideal candidates for this program have had exposure to the administrative aspects of non-profit organizations.  This experience enables students to have points of reference that compliment and enhance the curriculum.
What kinds of students are generally accepted?
The base requirements for acceptance are a baccalaureate degree from an accredited undergraduate institution and a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0. Admission to the program is competitive.  Priority is given to applicants who display previous experience in the field of arts administration, whether it is a career, part-time, internship, or structured volunteering. It is not enough to have a background in the performing arts; the ideal candidates for this program have had exposure to the administrative aspects of non-profit organizations.  This experience enables students to have points of reference that compliment and enhance the curriculum.
Do I need to take the GMAT? GRE?
Applicants to the dual degree MBA/MA in Arts Administration Program must take the GMAT. Applicants to the MA in Arts Administration Program may take either the GRE or the GMAT. When applying for the dual degree, scores and application materials should be sent to the COB Admissions Office AND the CCM Admissions Office.

Because most students pursue the dual degree, we recommend you take the GMAT. This will save you extra time, effort, and money. For online practice tests and for more information please see the website http://www.testprepreview.com/gmat_practice.htm.

How do I apply to the MBA/MA Program?

Dual degree candidates must complete an application with the College-Conservatory of Music and must also apply to the College of Business. Candidates must submit GMAT scores. Both applications are available through the Arts Administration website. Dual degree candidates may submit copies of the same essays and letters of recommendation in both application files.
