The best place to begin an exploration of Siena's historic center is Piazza del Campo adn the surrounding maze of medieval streets, still unspoiled and endowed with the grandeur of the age when it was at its peak.

The duomo is one of Italy's greatest cathedrals, a spectacular mixture of sculpture, paintings, and Pisan-influenced Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Among the duomo's treasures are sculptural masterpieces by Nicola Pisano, Donatello, and Michelangelo, a fine inlaid floor and a magnificent fresco cyle by Pinturicchio.
