Music History: Cognate

The Music History cognate will encompass five graduate-level HILT courses (15 hours at the 500, 600, and 800 level) from two contiguous periods, i.e., Renaissance and Baroque.  A student interested in a music history cognate should decide on the preferred periods, then consult with a musicology faculty member whose specialty is in one of those periods.  If the faculty member agrees, s/he will become the student’s cognate advisor and will help the student draw up a suitable plan of study according to the following guidelines

At least one of the courses must be an 800-level course.

The following courses may not be used for cognate hours:

• Any courses being used to fulfill the student’s degree requirement in music history,
• Graduate History Review (16-HILT-601, 602, 603), and
• Graduate History and Style (16-HILT-801, 802, 803).
