Music Theory: Cognate

The Music Theory cognate requirements are:

—MTHC-818: "Schenkerian Analysis 1"; offered in the Fall every other year, in alternation with "Set Theory 1."

MTHC-816: "Set Theory 1"; offered in the Fall every other year, in alternation with "Schenkerian Analysis 1."

MTHC-701: "Music Theory Pedagogy 1" (stress on written theory) -or- MTHC-702: "Music Theory Pedagogy 2" (stress on aural skills); offered Winter (701) and Spring (702) every other year (during the "Set Theory 1" year)

Electives to complete the number of hours specified in each program's cognate requirements.

Cognate electives:  Any non-required graduate theory courses. Possible recommended electives include:

• Music Theory Pedagogy 2 (if Music Theory Pedagogy 1 has been taken as a requirement)
16th-Century Counterpoint
• 18th-Century Counterpoint
Post-1890 Analysis (may be taken more than once as long as it is on different topics)
Readings in Music Theory

Advanced Topics: Rhythm and Meter
Aesthetics
• Schenkerian Analysis 2
Set Theory 2
• History of Theory (with permission of instructor)
• Any of a
variety of theory seminars, offered every year
