Music History: Undergraduate Curriculum
About the Program
The Music History curriculum at the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) consists primarily of the study of Western music and music literature, both of the past and present. It deals with music and musical sources from ancient times to modern in vocal, instrumental, and electronic/computer media. The program in Music History also includes contextual studies in the liberal arts and foreign languages, all of which form a curriculum and enable the student to understand conditions under which music was written and performed. Performance opportunities in early music labs complement those in the traditional ensembles.
Study of Music History at CCM presents a unique opportunity to pursue an essentially academic discipline in a performance-oriented school. CCM offers MM and PhD degrees in music history and musicology, respectively, so the undergraduate music history major has an opportunity to mingle with graduate students at varying stages of professional development. Equally important, CCM gives students opportunities to study with internationally recognized musicologists along with exceptional ensemble experience.
