Music Theory: Undergraduate Curriculum
About the Program
Music theory majors acquire a broad knowledge of musical meanings and practices. Writing and cognitive skills in music and language, and analytical techniques in the principal styles and genres, enable the student to pursue individual methodologies and ensure independent thought, In addition, a thorough grounding in music history and an introduction to speculative theory prepares the student for advanced, more detailed study encountered at the graduate levels.
Emphasis in the undergraduate theory curriculum is on writing and analytical skills. In addition, theory majors are exposed to the rich musical environment at CCM. This special mixture of theory and performance affords a unique perspective which is musically and intellectually stimulating. Not only is CCM distinctive as a college of music, but the city of Cincinnati is famous for its symphony orchestra, opera, and May Festival. Furthermore, since CCM offers theory programs leading to the MM and PhD degrees, the undergraduate theorist has the opportunity to mingle with graduate students at various stages of professional development. A close relationship with a faculty adviser fosters individual growth and perspective. The curriculum is reviewed frequently to reflect current ideas in the discipline. Prominent theorists and analysts are often guests on campus to provide fresh stimulation for each student.
