Mara Helmuth, studio director and professor of music
Director Mara Helmuth, Professor of Composition. BA, MM, U. of Illinois, DMA in Composition, Columbia U., composes for computer, tape, real-time systems, and acoustic instruments. She taught at Texas A&M University and New York University previously. Her research deals with Internet 2 improvisation, granular synthesis, representation of electroacoustic music, and her public domain graphical programs for computer music composition, Patchmix and StochGran. Her music has been played internationally, appears on compact disks from Centaur, the Electronic Music Foundation and Open Space, and she has written articles appearing in Computer Music Journal, Perspectives of New Music, ARRAY, Journal of New Music Research and Computers, and Mathematics with Applications. Recent work includes the installation Hidden Mountain based on travels in Tibetan areas of Qinghai province in China, the Lifting the Mask for video, and improvisations for qin and computer.
