Audition Requirements
Live auditions for the 2007 - 2008 academic year will take place on January 13, February 3, 16, and 17, 2007. Horn audition times are limited on February 16 and 17. Applicants are encouraged to audition on January 13 and February 3 when possible.
Bachelor Curricula:
Applicants must prepare the following:
Two etudes in contrasting styles by Kopprasch, Gallay, or Maxime-Alphonse (Book II-IV)
All Major Scales
Performance majors must also prepare:
- the first movement of a Mozart or Strauss Concerto, or solo of comparable difficulty, from the standard repertoire, as well as orchestral excerpts from:
- Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5, mvt. 2, horn 1 OR
- Mendelssohn, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Nocturne, horn 1
- Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel, opening calls, horn 1 OR
- Beethoven, Symphony No.3, Scherzo Trio, horn 2
AND
Concentrations (Music Education majors or BA degree)
In addition to the etudes and scales:
- Gliere, Intermezzo, OR Glazunov, Reverie, OR solo of comparable difficulty.
Master of Music - Horn Performance:
Applicants must prepare the following:
- One complete solo work from the standard repertoire
- Five orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire, which must include the following:
- Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5, mvt. 2, horn 1
- Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel, opening calls, horn 1
- Mahler, Symphony No. 5, Scherzo, 8 measures after rehearsal #10 to #11, horn obbligato
Doctor of Musical Arts - Horn Performance:
Applicants must prepare the following:
- Two complete major solo works from the standard repertoire of contrasting stylistic periods.
- Ten orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire, which must include those works on the MM list with the addition of:
- Shostakovich, Symphony No. 5, mvt. 1, low tutti passage
- Wagner, Siegfried's Rhine Journey, short call, horn 1
- Strauss, Ein Heldenleben, opening call, horn 1
Artist Diploma - Horn Performance:
Applicants must prepare the following:
- Two complete major solo works from the standard repertoire of contrasting stylistic periods, and one solo for unaccompanied horn from the twentieth or twenty-first century.
- Twelve orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire, which must include those works on the MM and DMA lists with the addition of:
- Beethoven, Symphony No. 7, mvt. 1, exposition call, horn 1
- Strauss, Don Quixote, Variation VII, horn 4
- Ravel, Pavane for a Dead Princess, horn 1
Horn Cognate (MM / DMA / PhD):
Applicants must prepare the following:
- A complete major solo work from the standard repertoire
- One etude chosen from Maxime-Alphonse Book IV or Gallay Non-Measured Preludes
- The following orchestral excerpts:
- Brahms, Symphony No. 1, mvt. 2, horn 1
- Strauss, Till Eulenspiegel, opening calls, horn 1
- Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5, mvt. 2, horn 1
