The Music Experience

Another assignment that the graduate students tackle in "Contemporary Topics" is to, after detailed study, create a model of the music experience that includes references to several learning theories and ways of conceptualizing learning experiences.  The model is to be artistic, but also needs to be explained and justified by each student.  Here are few examples of their creations.

Model Number 1 - "The Maze"

"For this project, I chose a maze because the music experience is what we choose to make it. In a maze, one has many choices. The choices made do not always end where we think they will. Sometimes this is disappointing, and sometimes there are unexpected joys. There are two doors leading into the maze. One is marked for the Music Professional and the other for the Music Amateur. Will music be a career or a fulfilling hobby? Many times we decide which we would like to be, but sometimes along the way our we may change our minds. This is why both entrances lead to a connection where one could crossover to the other path."

Model #2 - "The Spokes"

"In my music experience model, I saw music as the center of its own cell, the nucleus, so to speak, with little offshoots feeding into the center of the nucleus, such as "exploration", "creation", "enjoyment", "literacy", and so forth.  Some of these offshoots could break away with music still surviving, but the experience would be changed, and this can be represented by removing any of the spokes easily.  One can also add additional spokes for other aspects that aren't included in the model, and in this way the experience can be tailored to each individual with slight variations occurring in every person's point of view of what constitutes the fabric of music."
