Graduate Assistantship Information
A bachelor’s degree in music education from an accredited institution and/or certification to teach music in the U.S. public schools is required for admission to the Master of Music in Music Education program. Evidence of the applicant’s musicianship is also required. References accompanying the application must contain an evaluation of the applicant’s teaching ability. Those applying for assistantships must submit the GA Application, a resumé and have three years public teaching experience. A personal interview in Cincinnati is recommended, and required if applying for an assistantship.
The program is designed according to three strands:
Music Education Core, Music Studies, Specialization/Electives Studies.

A slate of courses/experiences has been created to use as a template for crafting specialization coursework based on advisement with a designated faculty member in each of the following areas*:

In addition, each student must complete a credit-bearing project as a culminating scholarly ‘capstone’ to the degree. After completion and approval of this project and at the conclusion of coursework, candidates will be examined by the music education faculty and a professor from the specialization area if outside the field of music education. The format and extent of the exam will be determined by the music education faculty.
The program may be completed in one academic year plus summer coursework, or over the course of two academic years. Due to the compressed timeframe, those electing to complete the program in one academic year only will generally be eligible for financial aid in the form of a tuition scholarship. Graduate assistantships (tuition scholarship plus stipend) carrying responsibility for teaching and administrative assignments will normally be awarded only to those who elect to complete the program over two years.

This program is designed for those who demonstrate academic and musical excellence along with a high level of interest and effectiveness in music education. Applicants for the degree seek to extend their competence in and qualifications for positions of leadership in teaching, supervision and administration, and research in elementary, secondary and higher education. Each student’s program of study is developed with the direction of the designated major advisor.
The program emphasizes the following:
· A broad training in the field of music education that stresses historical, philosophical, psychological and aesthetic aspects of music education (54-60 credit hours)
· Studies in the field of music with particular emphasis placed on the extension of knowledge of music literature and theory (30-39 credit hours)
· A program of studies in an approved interdisciplinary area that is related to music education—see MM Specialization areas (21-24 credit hours)
· Research studies and dissertation (18-24 credit hours)
PREREQUISITES
Prerequisites for this degree are a baccalaureate degree in music education, or an equivalent degree, completed at an accredited college or university, a master’s degree and a strong musical/academic background as reflected by transcripts, GRE scores, and letters of reference. To be admitted to the program, an applicant must submit evidence of not less than three years of successful teaching experience in music at the elementary or secondary
level.
CURRICULUM
Each student’s program of study is developed with the direction of the designated major adviser. Diagnostic entrance examinations in music history and literature and in theory may be used to determine the specific course requirements in the area of studies in music. A candidate is expected to have a basic knowledge of trends, events, and developments in music education and to have the writing and analytical skills requisite for advanced graduate work. The candidate must demonstrate ability to engage in research in a variety of ways and not simply in those ways related to the dissertation. Course work or independent study in research design, statistics, computer analysis, etc. may be appropriate.

DISSERTATION
The candidate is required to present a dissertation representing competent research related to music education. A formal proposal for the dissertation will be submitted to the CCM Graduate Thesis and Research Committee for approval. After this approval has been obtained, the Director of Graduate Studies will appoint an advisory committee for the project. Upon completion of the project, the DME candidate will appear before a committee of graduate faculty members for a public defense covering the dissertation according to university guidelines. This appearance is in addition to the regular comprehensive examination for candidacy and shall be for a duration of two hours. Total credit hours: 135 credits beyond the baccalaureate level. Up to 45 credit hours of graduate work may be accepted as transfer credit from another institution, provided the candidate has received a master’s degree from that institution and the work relates directly to the program outlined above.
The DME candidate should expect to spend two years in full-time study; three are recommended.
