Christina Merblum
Violin
Christina Merblum, originally from Connecticut, began her violin studies
at age six. She received her training at the Hartt School Preparatory
Division, the Manhattan School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of
Music, where she was also involved in the Preparatory Program as violin
assistant. Her teachers have included Donald Weilerstein, Shmuel Ashkenasi,
David Updegraff and Mitchell Stern. She has participated in festivals
including the Juilliard Quartet Seminar, the Takacs Quartet Seminar,
the Advanced Quartet Studies Program at the Aspen Music School and Festival,
ENCORE School for Strings (where she was the recipient of the Kay Logan Award),
the Audubon Quartet Seminar, Santa Barbara Music Academy of the West,
Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival and Yellow Barn. Her chamber music
appearances have included performances with the Ann Arbor-based Phoenix
Ensemble, concerts throughout Switzerland with the VOX Piano Quartet in 2000,
the Paganiniana Tour of May 2001, as well as the Yellow Barn 2000 Winter Tour.
From 2001-2003, Christina held the position of first violinist with the Niles
String Quartet, Graduate Quartet in Residence at the University of Kentucky.
Christina founded the Azmari Quartet in 2003, serving as the Graduate
Quartet-in-Residence at Northern Illinois University under the tutelage
of the Vermeer Quartet. The Azmari Quartet currently holds the position
of Patricia A. Corbett String Quartet-in-Residence at Northern Kentucky
University.Ê As a member of the quartet, she also serves as Co-Artistic
Director of the Norse Chamber Music Festival. Additional residencies for
the quartet have included, Gros Morne Summer Music in Newfoundland,
Canada as well as the Austin Chamber Music Festival.Ê Ms. Merblum's
recent concert appearances have included collaborations with Awadagin
Pratt, Audrey Luna, Katherine Murdock, Marc Johnson, Anthony McGill,
Michael Strauss and members of the Jupiter Quartet.
