Composers
John Berners - earned his Ph.D. in Composition & Theory from the University of Michigan. His works have been performed by the Detroit and Virginia Symphonies. He is Assistant Professor at the University of Indianapolis.
John Liberatore - A native of Auburn, NY, John Liberatore (b. 1984) now lives with his wife in Rochester where he is currently pursuing a PhD in composition at the Eastman School of Music. He serves as a teaching assistant to Allan Schindler in the Eastman Computer Music Center and is an active member of the Ossia New Music Ensemble board of productions. His works have been performed around the United States, as well as in Europe and South America.
John E. Bower - composes music for acoustic instruments, electronics, and combinations of the two. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music and Duke University, John currently lives in Minneapolis.
Lisa Coons - Growing up on a farm in northeast Missouri, Lisa R. Coons acquired a special affinity to noise composition and found sounds. She studied composition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City during her undergraduate degree and received her Masters from SUNY Stony Brook. Presently a graduate student at Princeton University, her recent work has expanded to include works for amplified instruments, turntables, and metal percussion sculptures with homemade electronics. She received the 2005 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers Award for her string quartet Awkward Music and is a member of the New York-based composers collective, The Collected.
Natalie Draper - (b. 1985) is from Bethseda, MD. She received her BA in music from Carleton College, and will have her MM in music composition from CCM by the time Music09 starts!
Ted Goldman - began his undergraduate studies in physics at Columbia University and maintained his love of patterned abstraction as he moved into composition. Now a doctoral student at The Juilliard School, he is also active as a classical radio host for WCKR 89.9 FM-NY, where he plays and discusses music both new and old.
Lucas Hausrath - Lucas Hausrath, born in 1987, grew up in the Cincinnati area, where he actively pursued music through piano and composition. Lucas is beginning his fourth year at the UNC School of the Arts.
Michael Ippolito - is a versatile composer who has worked with classical, jazz and folk musicians in a variety of contexts. He is currently a student in the Masters program at the Juilliard School, studying with John Corigliano.
Benjamin Irwin (also clarinetist) - Ben Irwin holds master's degrees in composition and clarinet performance from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a bachelor's degree in music from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in composition and theory at the University of California at Davis. Upcoming performances include a string quartet, Helix, that will be performed at UC Davis in April, and a trio for bass clarinet, cello, and percussion, which will be performed by the Empyrean Ensemble in May. As a clarinetist, Ben specializes in contemporary classical music, klezmer music, and improvisation.
Nicolai Jacobsen - (b. 1979) is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music Composition and Theory at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, where he has studied with Arthur Gottshcalk, Pierre Jalbert, and Kurt Stallmann.
Jordan Kuspa - is a composer/cellist from Del Mar, California. He received a B.Mus. from Rice University and is currently pursuing an M.M. in Composition at the Yale School of Music.
Eun Young Lee - a Native Korean Eun Young Lee is a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago. She received the first prize at Tsang-Houei Hsu International Music Composition Award and the 2008 Max Di Julio Prize at N.E.O.N.
Marcela Pavia - has a degree in Composition followed by mastercourses with Francisco Kropfl and Franco Donatoni, in addition to being a composer in residence in USA and Switzerland. Her works have been awarded at many competitions and have been performed in prestigious festivals like the 2008 Beijing Congress on Women in Music and the 2008 International Computer Music Conference at Belfast.
Jeffrey Roberts - his compositions have been performed in Asia, Europe and the US. He studied guqin improvisation in China on a 2006 Fulbright. He holds a PhD in Composition from Brandeis University. He is a professor at The Beijing Center for China Studies in Beijing.
Jonathan Russell - lives in San Francisco where he composes music for a wide range of ensembles and situations. An avid clarinetist and bass clarinetist, he plays in and composes for a heavy metal bass clarinet quartet, a bass clarinet duo called Sqwonk, and a balkan/klezmer/free jazz band. He has degrees from Harvard and San Francisco Conservatory.
Matthew Schreibeis - received degrees from the Eastman School of Music (B.M.) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D.). His honors include 1st Prize in the NACUSA Young Composers Competition and commissions from the Hanson Institute for American Music and the Max Di Julio Fund.
Rossella Spinosa (also pianist) - She has a degree in composition from the “G. Verdi” Conservatory in Milan with further studies at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the School of Music in Fiesole. As pianist, Rossella has appeared in Europe, Canada, Russia and in Rome, Como, Milan and other Italian cities. She has recorded for Bookstore Teatro alla Scala, Stradivarius and AliaMusica.

Alex Stephenson - is a native of the Philadelphia region and is currently an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. He began composing at age ten and is also a pianist and cellist.
Christopher Walczak - is presently pursuing his DMA in composition at Rice University. He holds both B.M. and Masters degrees in composition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he studied with professors Stephen Dembski and Laura Schwendinger. He has been commissioned by the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers, Flutes Quatre, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wind Ensemble, and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.
Kyle Werner - (b. 1987) is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is completing his fourth year as an undergraduate composition student at CCM, where he has studied with Joel Hoffman and Michael Fiday. His works have been performed by the Chicago Chamber Musicians, Livingston Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Youth Symphony, and students of the Juilliard School, University of Michigan, CCM, and the Musicx festival. Charlie Williams - is faculty at Columbia College Chicago's MFA program in Music Composition for the Screen, and plays in his chamber/pop intersection group Mira Mira as well as in Argentine tango band Truco. Also a pianist, he has performed John Corigliano's Concerto For Piano and Orchestra with the Northwestern University Symphony Orchestra as winner of that school's concerto competition, and was awarded a special prize for performance of new music at the 2nd International Shostakovich Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. Most of his recent work deals with new ways to integrate live audio processing into the performer's experience.

Performers
Johanna Ballou (piano) - is an American pianist who completed her BMus at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Johanna plays as an orchestral, chamber, and solo pianist and keyboardist, accompanist, has worked extensively in and music for film as well as other forms of applied music. Johanna is an active performer of new music, touring with Music Theatre Wales and other chamber ensembles, and frequently works with composers in the performance and recording of new works. She returned to the USA in 2008, and is currently working as a freelance musician based in St. Louis.
Aida-Maria Boiesan (violin) - Canadian violinist Aida-Maria Boiesan is currently living in the Netherlands where she is in the first year of her Masters of Music program at the ArtEZ Conservatorium.
Amanda DeBoer (voice) - performs with Dal Niente, Opera Cabal, ai Ensemble, BABEL: An Experimental Voice Ensemble, and others. She recently attended the SoundSCAPE Festival where she received the Outstanding Performer award.
Erica Drake (percussion) - earned a Bachelors Degree in Music Education, an MM (Percussion Performance) from the University of Oregon, and holds a Secondary Teaching License in the State of Oregon. She is a native of the Pacific Northwest currently living in Cincinnati, Ohio pursuing a DMA in Percussion at CCM. She actively performs as a soloist and as part of AE2 (a cross-genre contemporary duo with percussionist Aaron Jester), as well as in many local ensembles of the orchestral, chamber, and rock varieties.
Benjamin Fraley (percussion) - is from Rhode Island, and currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Benjamin has received degrees in percussion performance and music management from The Hartt School and the College-Conservatory of Music.
Amy Galbraith (oboe/english horn)
Pethrus Gardborn (flute/piccolo) - The winner of the 2008 Myrna Brown and Frank Bowen Competitions as well as the 2006 NFA Piccolo Artist Competition, Swedish-born flutist Pethrus Gärdborn studied with Jan Bengtson, Associate Principal with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Dr. Bradley Garner at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. He regularly gives solo performances, mainly in the Stockholm area, and performs as a freelance musician with several ensembles, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.
Yen-Lin Goh (piano) - Born in Malaysia to Chinese parents, Yen-Lin is pursuing DMA in Contemporary Music/Piano in Bowling Green State University. She holds degrees in both piano performance and Communications/Radio-TV-Film. She is also a composer and improviser.
Benjamin Irwin (clarinet)
Aaron Jester (percussion) - Aaron Jester is from Birmingham, AL. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the University of Oregon. He is currently working on an Artist Diploma in Percussion at the College Conservatory of Music.
Kana Kimura (violin) - was born in Tokyo, Japan and began her violin studies at the age of four. She holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Houston. She currently resides in Houston, Texas and performs with Houston Grand Opera, River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and Mercury Baroque. She also enjoys teaching and maintains a studio of over twenty young children.
Yu-Chun Kuo (percussion) - is currently a DMA student in percussion at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Native of Taiwan, she earned a BM in Music Industry and Percussion Performance from the University of Southern California and a MM in Percussion Performance from Baylor University. She is an active performer, both as a soloist, and in chamber and orchestral settings, and she greatly enjoys collaborating with composers and musicians.
Kerrith Livengood (flute/piccolo) - Kerrith Livengood is a composer and flutist currently working on her Ph.D at the University of Pittsburgh. A lover of virtually all avant-garde music, Kerrith is the principal flutist for the ensemble Alia Musica Pittsburgh, as well as a founding composer member. She is an active improviser and experimenter, with a wide variety of performing experience, from Bach to Anthony Braxton to Gino Robair's I, Norton.
Liz Lee (cello) - is currently a DMA student of Joshua Gindele (Miro Quartet) at the Univ. of TX at Austin. She received her BM from Rice University and her MM Chamber Music from the SF Conservatory of Music. She is an active teacher and orchestral player and has been a member of various contemporary music ensembles and chamber music collaborations.
Jessica Prus (flute/piccolo) - is an accomplished orchestral flutist, piccoloist, and chamber musician, currently residing in Bloomington, Indiana. She has studied at Northwestern University, the University of Louisville, and Indiana University.
Elizabeth Remizowski (piano) - is currently earning her Masters in Piano Performance at Florida State University, studying with Read Gainsford. She earned her Bachelors degree at the Crane School of Music of SUNY Potsdam, and while there was a winner in the annual concerto competition. She is active on the new music scene, commissioning and performing pieces by both fellow students and faculty.
Rachel Smith (cello) - lives in Pittsburgh, PA where she attends Duquesne University. As a cello performance major, she performs with various contemporary ensembles and collaborates with composers and recording artists throughout the city. She takes much of her inspiration from Alban Berg, Benjamin Britten, and Philip Glass.

Isaac Thompson (violin) - currently resides in Austin, TX where he is completing graduate studies with Brian Lewis at the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied with Won-Bin Yim and performed with the Cincinnati Real-Time Composers, NeXT Ens, and the Ippolito String Quartet.
Brenda van der Merwe (violin/viola) - is an active chamber musician and soloist in the Boston area. She has concertized in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Boston's Symphony Hall, and at the Tanglewood Music Center. A New Music Connoisseur reviewer described her recent New York City premiere of an interactive solo violin work as "highly sophisticated microtonal playing." She is the founding violinist/violist for the Xanthos Ensemble, now presented by Boston University, and formerly Ensemble in Residence at Boston Conservatory. As an advocate for new music, she regularly performs chamber and solo works by visiting composers, faculty and graduate fellows at Brandeis University, Boston University, Wellesley College, New England Conservatory, Dartmouth College, with the Harvard Group for New Music, and the Fromm Players at Harvard.
