William Grubb

William Grubb, cellist, made his professional debut as soloist with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at the age of 17. In 1976, he was winner of the Concert Artists Guild Auditions and was presented in his New York recital debut at Carnegie Recital Hall.

Mr. Grubb's teachers have included his father, Cassel Grubb; at age 14 he began cello studies with Fritz Maag at Indiana University; and later worked with Ronald Leonard at the Eastman School of Music. Additional studies took him to The Juilliard School where his teacher was Harvey Shapiro. While at Juilliard he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1975, a Master of Music degree in 1976, and in 1981 became the fourth cellist in Juilliard's history to earn the Doctor of Music Arts degree. Upon graduation he was winner of the school's Victor Herbert Prize and the Alumni Award.

Mr. Grubb is founder of two chamber ensembles, the Aspen Soloists, and the New Amsterdam Chamber Players. Together with violinist Laurie Carney and pianist Claude Cymerman, he is a member of the Concorde Trio. His chamber and recital appearances have taken him to all 50 states as well as Canada, Switzerland, Spain, Iceland, France, Italy, and Japan. As recitalist he has appeared at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, the Gardner Museum in Boston, the Phillips Collection in Washington, and at the Kennedy Center. He has shared the stage in chamber performances with some of the world's leading artists, including Isaac Stern, Salvatore Accardo, Bruno Giuranna, Michael Tree, Dawn Upshaw, the Angeles String Quartet, and the American String Quartet. He plays regularly with the American Chamber Ensemble in residence at Hofstra University and the New York Chamber Soloists.

Summer music festival appearances include Saratoga, Music-at-Gretna, La Musica di Asolo, Taos Festival, Marin Music Fest, White Mountain Music Festival, June Music Festival, Music from Angel Fire, and Aspen Music Festival. Mr. Grubb has been a faculty member at Aspen each summer since 1976 and has presented cello masterclasses at the Peabody Conservatory, University of Michigan, University of Colorado, DePauw University, Temple University, and City University of New York.

He has served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and Brooklyn College of City University of New York. Mr. Grubb currently is professor of cello and chamber music at the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University and at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. At Aspen he is director of the string chamber music program. He has written his own cello method book and has recorded for CRI and Monitor Records.
