Piano Opportunities

The Prep Piano Faculty works to cultivate a desire to excel in piano among the young and to guide them in the maturing of their skills and the deepening of their experience. Through our Group Piano Programs in particular, we also provide a strong education in music through the piano for students of a wide range of ages and abilities. Our faculty includes members with expertise in Jazz and the Organ.

Weekly Instruction

A variety of private and group contexts are available including Suzuki Piano, Piano Partners, and Piano Class for Adult Students. Wherever possible, new students are admitted to the program throughout the year. Please call the Music Registrar who will discuss the various options with you.

Group Classes

Music for Little Mozarts – 4-6 years - $275 (includes $65 materials fee)

Instructor: Lindsey Zierolf
Music for Little Mozarts is a comprehensive approach to piano playing geared toward children ages 4-6 that lays a foundation for a lifetime of musical enjoyment. Students will follow the adventures of Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear as they learn to sing, play, listen to, and create music in CCM’s state-of-the-art piano labs. Fee includes deluxe starter kit with music and accompanying materials.

Anyone interested in this program should contact the office at 556-2595. Classes are 40 minutes and meet at 9:15 and 10:00 on Saturday mornings.

Chamber Music

For students who have already accomplished at least an intermediate level of piano proficiency, Chamber Music provides an opportunity to have additional instruction in piano duets and duos or with players of other instruments, as the opportunities provide. Please contact the office for information on the Accent Chamber Music Program.

Master Classes

For students working with upper intermediate and advanced level repertoire, these events provide a special opportunity to perform before and work with a “master” piano teacher. We encourage all piano students to observe these events as an incentive to the advancement of their playing. For students who do not have Weekly Instruction at CCM, participant and observer’s fees apply. Check with your instructor for further information.

Clavinova Connection

A keyboard program for older adults sponsored by the CCM Prep Department, the Council on Aging, Cinancinnati Area Senior Servies, Henderson Music and Yamaha. Offered through area senior centers, the Clavinova Connection features free group keyboard lessons for interested seniors. For more information, call 556-2595.

Performances And Evaluations

Throughout each year there are many opportunities to perform from private studio recitals at CCM to comprehensive evaluations and competitive events in the Cincinnati Tri-State area. CCM maintains ties with other organizations in the area in order to coordinate these events. In some cases, a participant’s fee applies. These special events include:

  • The CCM Preparatory Piano Concerto Competition
This year the Piano Concerto Competition will be held on March 1 in Werner Recital Hall. It is open only to CCM Prep piano students who are below the age of 14. Information and applications will be available in September.

  • The Merit Competition Festival
Held on May 3, all students studying privately are encouraged to participate in the Merit Festival. Students will be judged and evaluated by experts. Selected students will have the opportunity to represent CCM Prep on selected performances in 2007-2008.

  • The National Piano Playing Auditions of the National Guild of Piano Teachers
These are offered at numerous locations throughout the country for the students of its member teachers. This event is ideal for students of all ages and levels of ability. CCM offers its facilities for several days in June each year for this event.

  • CCM Prep Piano Certificates
Piano certificates are available for students of grade-school age who take weekly instruction at CCM Prep. There are seven repertoire-based levels from beginning to advanced, and Honors Certificate. The Cetificate program includes mandatory theory instruction, participation in master classes and recitals, as well as juries, to advance to higher levels.
