The drama and the actors themselves are unexpressive unless we can see them on a stage. The special quality and significance of a specific theatrical production goes beyond the need for basic visibility into the realm of shadows, angles, and colors. The timing and rhythm of these lighting components at work can be effected subtly for certain dramas and dynamically for vibrant musicals, dance, and grand opera.

With an awareness of the unique qualities of the particular scenic, costume, and makeup designs, lighting designers work extremely closely with stage directors to bring out the intent of the production through mood, atmosphere, composition, and focus.

The master electrician supervises the technical realization of the lighting designer's plan and specifications, organizing the electrics crew and the equipment for installation, focusing, cueing, and running. All electrical devices, equipment, and special effects are his or her responsibility.

The lighting board operator controls the lighting through technology but must do so with the sensitivity of an artist so that onstage dramatic effects and timing are achieved and maintained.
