MFA Students




Kenneth E. Helvig, MFA '04
Kenneth designed the winter January Opera workshop, “Transformations.” This summer he will be designing and doing production work at The Forestburgh Playhouse in NY State. There, he is designing “Driving Ms. Daisy” and ”Witness for the Prosecution” He will be designing his first mainstage for CCM this fall, “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest” directed by Richard Hess.
Steven Mack, MFA '03
Steven recently designed in our new CCM Studio Theatre’s first ever musical in the round, “She Loves Me,” directed by Melissa Johnson. He used two Mac 600 units throughout the show for varying color schemes and intensity in this most demanding musical. Steve has also assisted on two large Architectural Lighting Design Internships this past year. He is a Project Manager and Associate Designer for Visions In Lighting of Cincinnati. Both projects are a few years from completion but are together well over 12.5 million dollars.
Elizabeth Zernechel, MFA '03
Elizabeth designed the first ever back-to-back repertory mainstage shows here at CCM. Her front of house rep plot for the world premiere musical “Dracula” and the drama department’s production “The Laramie Project” was an extremely successful design. Liz completed a four-month internship in Architectural Lighting with King Lighting of Cincinnati fall quarter ‘01. Last year she also designed a Cincinnati Ballet performance of “Cinderella on Tour,” and will be designing for Ballet Tech of Cincinnati in August at the Aronoff Center’s Proctor and Gamble Theatre. Liz was also an instructor of Intro to Stage Lighting last year, and will teach both Intro and Lighting 1 this year. Liz was married in June and recently found out she was an ETC Lighting Design Sponsorship Recipient to LDI 2002.
Elizabeth Lammer, MFA '02
Elizabeth interned this past year with the Cincinnati Ballet Company, working as Assistant Lighting Designer on the fall “Cinderella on Tour,” and will be the Assistant Lightnig Designer for the Cincinnati Opera 2002 summer season. There, Liz will be Assistant to USA 829 designer, Thomas Hase. Her lighting design for “The Crucible” with international opera Director Nicholas Muni was spectacular. Liz’s thesis production design will be the fall musical “The Boys From Syracuse” and will be directed by Aubrey Berg, with scenery by Paul Shortt.
Heather Layman, MFA '02
Heather graduated this spring with her thesis design “The Ballad of Baby Doe,” directed by Englishman Thomas De Mallet Burgess. This exciting design used overhead intelegent lighting fixtures for mood evocative ambiance throughout the show. Heather will be working this summer at The Barrington Stage Co. in the Berkshires. Recently she was the Assistant Lighting Designer for CCM’s Hot Summer Night’s 2001 Season. Last fall she assisted Tom Hase and his lighting design for “King Lear” at The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
Robert Hahn, MFA '01
Robert graduated in December with his thesis production of “Candide”. His designs have been visually stunning and have won Robert two Ezekiel USITT-Ohio awards, one for his main-stage creation of “Our Countries Good,” and one for “A Doll’s House” in the new Studio Theatre. Rob was also an National Opera Association winner for his Lighting Design of “The Rape of Lucretia.” Rob is now based out of Chicago. Hot off the press:” Rob has just accepted a position with The University of Purdue/Fort Wayne as Asst. Professor of Design.
Paul Davies, MFA '01
As of January 2003 Paul is now an instructor in Theatre Lighting Technology at The University of Leeds, based at Bretton Hall in Yorkshire, England. Paul has accepted an Adjunct Assistant Professorship at The University of California State-Chico College with their Theatre Department for the 2001-2002 academic years. There he designed two productions and taught all lighting design classes for the year. He will be designing dance this summer for Banff and is presently in the job search mode for fall 2002. Paul was an ETC Lighting Design Sponsorship Recipient to LDI 2000.
James Milkey, MFA '01
James recently finished a five-month internship with Ken Billington & Associates designing and assisting in NYC for the Tony Award winning lighting designer. Jim returned to CCM and finished his MFA with the thesis production of “The Grand Hotel” in February ‘01. Jim is now based permanently in NYC and has informed us that in May he has become a member of the USA-829 designers union. He continues to work with Billington Associates and assisted on “Dance of the Vampires” on Broadway and new designs for Sea World.
Deanna Fitzgerald, MFA ’01
Deanna returned to CCM in March of ‘01 to design her thesis production of: The CCM Winter Dance Concert. Her thesis designs are the first ever dance lighting creations used for a thesis defense at UC. Deanna has since relocated to the San Francisco area and is now freelancing there. Before this, Deanna toured for five years with the national touring company of “STOMP” as Lighting Supervisor.
Ranya Anabtawi, MFA '00
Ranya is now based in San Francisco working for Francis Krahe Associate specializing in Architectural Lighting Design. She is now working on the renovation of the Transamerica Lobby. In her last year of CCM study, Ranya interned with Theatreworks in Palo-Alto California for 20 weeks. She is quite busy and loves being back near her roots in Sacramento California.
Kevin Oakeson, MFA '99
Kevin is headed for his third year as Lighting Supervisor at the Santa Fe Opera. In LA he has been working for the Walt Disney Company where he specifically supervises all lighting at the El Capitan Theatre & Entertainment Center. He has signed up for some opera design work this coming year in Germany and is working at Theater Regensburg where he is designing “Alcina”.
Bee Bee Lee, MFA '99
Bee Bee is currently working in San Francisco with JS Nolan + Associates Lighting Design. Over the past 2 years she has committed herself to Architectural Lighting Designs and is also the Resident Lighting Designer and Technical Director Advisor for Shipp Dance Theatre in the Bay.
Susan Terrano, MFA ‘98
Susan is in her second full year as project associate, designer for Cross Lighting of Indiana. She is heading up special tour demonstrations of ETC’s new Wizywig software and systems concepts. She has also been busy designing shows for Xavier’s Department of Theatre and numerous musicals and dance touring productions at The Cincinnati Aronoff Center for The Arts.
Tara Codella, MFA ‘98
No specific details at this time, but Tara is based in Cleveland, OH. Happily married, freelancing, and doing architectural lighting applications.
Tanya Harper, MFA '96
Tanya is based in Lexington, Kentucky as staff Lighting & Sound Designer for the Singletary Center for The Arts. She is designing for major dance companies in the area and is an instructor at the university teaching beginning lighting students. “I am gearing up for the Lexington Shakespeare Festival again this summer (my third year). I am lighting all three shows (Comedy of Errors, Three Musketeers, and King Lear) and am also the Technical Coordinator for the Festival.” She is also consultant on developing a new dimming and control system for the Singletary Center this fall.
Mark Somerfield, MFA '96
Mark is based in Santa Barbara California running the performing Arts facility at the University. Mark is a member of USA 829 and is an AEA stage manager.
Lisa Katz, MFA '96
Lisa tells us she is finishing up architectural lighting design applications on the New Disney Europe Park in Paris. She has been working for Disney in LA, over the last 30 months on numerous staging and architectural lighting applications for the park-world-wide.
Steve Young, MFA '93
Steve has recently left the Ruzika Associates lighting Co in Los Angeles to join the LA based company of The Gallegos Group specializing in TV and Video Lighting Design. His freelance lighting design career is very active in the LA theatre Scene. In a recent review of Steve’s Design for “The Laramie Project” it notes, “the play's messages mixes with the Colony's own dreams as sunlight bursts through rain clouds (a gorgeous effect of Steven Young's lighting.)”
Jeff Gress, MFA’91
Jeff is based in Columbus, OH as has started his new Consulting Company, ArtSpace Design, LTD. Working with a number of regional Architects, Jeff is working on numerous theatrical spaces in the region.
Mark Williams, MFA’92
Mark was Assistant Professor at NIU in Dekalb, Illinois for 6 years and has been based in the Orlando Florida area since ’98. He does freelance design and is also a special effects designer and engineer.
Matthew Benjamin, MFA’91
Matthew is an Associate Professor in Design at Wright State University in his fifth year at the university. There, he is the head of Lighting Design and Supervisor of the Sound Design and Technology areas. Matt is designing regionally for opera and dance and is a member of USA 829. Before joining Wright State, Matt was a faculty member at Stockton College in New Jersey.
Jaime Benjamin, MFA’90
Jaime is an Associate Professor in Theatre Design at Lorraine County Community College in his 12th year at the university!! Jaime is freelancing in the area and doing great work with his students at the university. He is an avid Cleveland’s Indians Baseball fan and always has season tickets! He and his wife have two children now.
John Tees III, MFA ’90
Recent projects include: Florida State Opera Company, Dayton Opera, Assoc. Lighting Director with Regis and Kathy Lee, and production work with Saturday Night Live. John Joined the Union (USA 829) in 1996.
Daryl V. Harrison, MFA’ 89
Daryl is now based in Portland/Gresham Oregon. She has been doing design work for the Ballet company and teaching full time at Mt Hood Community College in Gresham Oregon. As Technical Director & Lighting Director she is responsible for numerous design and technical considerations. Daryl has recently married and is expecting this fall. Prior to this teaching position in Oregon she worked for seven years at Ocala Community College in the Orlando, Florida area. Recently we were informed that she is the proud mother of a baby boy and all is well, “Sutherland Louis Harrison Carson”.

James Bohne, BFA '91
Jim has been working at Disney as a fireman (pyrotechnic specialist) for 11 years now. He says Disney has recently gone IATSE, so he is now a new member of Local 631. He is also busy freelancing assisting former CCM lighting student Chris Lau ’85 with laser shows and special effect lighting in the Orlando area.
Paul Sanow, BFA '91
Paul has been with The Vincent Lighting Corporation for 10 years as a systems designer. He has recently been promoted to “Technical Sales Manager” and is enjoying the work tremendously. He has also joined the CCM/TD&P faculty as an adjunct instructor for Stage Lighting I students this last year. He has recently married “Maryanne” and they now live in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. In late August they have reported that they are the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl, “Tamara Anne “.
Robert (Rocco) Williams, BFA '93
As former Head Electrician for the New York City-Shakespeare In The Park, Robert has recently begun work with the leading Broadway production house in New York City at Fourth Phase Lighting. “Rocco is a senior production consultant with the international award winning company.”
Gwen Grossman, BFA '94
In May of this past May 01 Gwen Grossman graduated with honors and a MFA from The University Of California-San Diego School of the Arts. She has designed and assisted in New York, Chicago and recently returned from London where she assisted Tony Award winning lighting designer Chris Perry. She now resides in NYC and has been doing architectural lighting applications with Focus Lighting NYC.
Jason Vargas, BFA '94
Freelance Lighting and production work in Atlanta. MIA . No details at this time.
Stephen Brady, BFA '95
Steven moved to NYC immediately upon graduation and has been doing nonstop lighting design application and production work ever since. He loves NYC and has worked a number of summers as ALD at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. This summer he designed “Tea At Five” starring Kate Mulgrew as Katherine Hepburn at the Cleveland Playhouse directed by John Tillinger. The show moves to Boston’s American Repertory Theatre in September and hopefully to Broadway in the coming year. Steve has been a member of USAA Lighting design since ’98.
Kevin Uribe, BFA '95
Kevin moved to NYC also upon graduation, but has garnered almost all of his employment in Television and video technical support. Kevin recently was working for NBC in Utah for the winter Olympics for three months. “Greetings from NYC. I have been insanely busy! I guess all that learning in college paid off. It’s been pretty non-stop for me for a long time… I’m strictly a gaffer now. A gaffer is the crew chief and solves any electrical problem on a job. However, I usually end up solving problems for the riggers, the art department, or anyone else that has something go wrong. It’s great being a gaffer.” Kevin has been involved in many TV shows over the last few years, here are just a few: The 2002 Winter Olympics (NBC), The Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network (Yes Network), Neck News (Nickelodeon), Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (HBO), NBA Inside Stuff (NBC), NBA Match-Up (ESPN), The Journey with Caroline Miss (Oxygen Network), The Amanda Lewis Show, MTV’s Wannabe (MTV), The Daytime Emmy Awards (CBS), The Candice Bergen Show.
Christian Samuelson, BFA '95
Christian is doing freelance lighting and production work in Washington DC Area. “Haven’t been designing much lately, but I have programming a lot of moving lights. I’m still working for AV-Washington, and believe it or not, have a “top secret security clearance”. Weird huh? Installation of a/v systems for the CIA, FBI, NSA, and many other agencies.” You could have also seen some of Christian’s work on the National tour of Back Street Boys 99-2001.
Brian Mehring, BFA '95
Scenic and Lighting major at CCM, Brian is now in his 6th year as resident designer with ETC of Cincinnati. He is joined by CCM alum Chad Woerner as TD and Trent Kotch BFA ’00 Lighting, as Production Manager and ALD.
Steve Boulmetis, BFA '96
Steve is in his final year of MFA studies at Boston University’s School of Theatre. He returns this past summer from Japan where is just finished a six-month internship with a leading international consulting consortium; Theatre Projects. He finished his thesis design in April 2002, just graduated and will be moving to NYC in June. He is employed by Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer as an ALD.
Hal Fraser, BFA '97
Hal is in his 6th year of basing his production career out of Cincinnati and Local 5. In only a few years he has become one of the lead electricians with The Cincinnati Ballet and heading up their national and international tours. His internship/apprenticship with local 5 will become a full pledge very shortly. Congratulations to Hal and his commitment to Local 5.
Perchick Miller, BFA '97
Freelance Lighting and Sound production based in NYC. Blue man Group Nat’l tours. Degree pending.
Brian Schulte, BFA '98
Brian spent his first three years in sunny Newport Beach designing many industrials for California and shows basing out of Vegas. This past year he has moved to St. Louis and is freelancing with numerous Fortune 500 companies. He designed some of the BUDWEISER commercial elements for the Utah winter Olympics. He loves his new home in the Mid-West.
John Draginoff, BFA '99

Tony Puglielli, BFA '99
Tony is based in Milwaukee as their Lighting & Sound production supervisor. We understand he loves Milwaukee but despises the winters there.
Tyler Duffy, BFA '99
Tyler spent his first two years working on the east coast for Production Arts/Fourth Phase as a sales/designer—staff, specializing in new installations. He recently moved back to Cincinnati and is now employed by Cross Lighting of Indiana specializing in new market development.
Trent Kotch BFA '00
In January Trent assisted NYC designer Thomas Hase with the Cincinnati Ballet Production of Romeo and Juliet at the Aronoff Center of The Arts. Last July he finished his third season as Assistant Lighting Designer of the Cincinnati Opera’s acclaimed season. He recently informed us he is be the new Production Manager for ETC of Cincinnati’s 2001-’02 season. We understand at this time that he will return for a second season. Trent was married in 2001.
Tasha Emery, BFA '00
Tasha is now based in Sacramento, CA working for Sacramento Theatrical Lighting. She has been now freelancing and designing in the area for the past two years. She has designed for The Sacramento Theatre Company, the Shakespeare Festival and City College of Sacramento. Two of her designs were nominated for regional awards of excellence; “ Three Musketeers” and “Quilters”
Anton Shilov, BFA '00/ 02
Anton returned to CCM this past fall, 2001 and while in residence finished his remaining BFA requirements. Anton who majored in Lighting Design and Scenic Design spent the last three years producing shows in the Cincinnati area at the Arronoff Center for the Arts. He is now based in NYC and runs his own production Company developing tours for European and Far East presentations.
James Savage, BFA '01
James was with the Utah Shakespeare Festival for two seasons and last October began a new job with the Alabama Shakespeare Theatre. Jim was a dual major at CCM, specializing in Sound and Lighting Technology.
Brian Barnett, BFA '01
Brian has just finished a yearlong internship and professional affiliation with On Location lighting Of Cincinnati. He was an URTA finalist in February ’01, with over 14 call--backs at the national graduate recruitment interviews in Chicago. He attended the University of Washington this past year, but recently has decided to take a leave of absence.
David Weigant, BFA '01
The “Squeege” immediately upon graduation ended up in New Jersey with the New Jersey Shakespeare CO, as Resident Master Electrician. In January 2002 he joined the National Tour of “Cabaret” as assistant on the Sound Design team. In March of ’01 David was Assistant LD for “Cosi Fan Tutti” designed by JH Gage-Visions In Light for Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. David is a member of IATSE and will continue this year with “Cabaret.”
Chris Perkins, BFA '02
Chris spent the ’01 summer in Scotland with the “Fringe Festival” as a production associate and master head technician for a “rock” space during the 5-week festival. For the past year, Chris has freelanced for On Location Lighting of Cincinnati, one of the premiere industrial lighting companies in the Midwest. Chris has also been doing facility production work on numerous installations this past year with Visions In Light, of Cincinnati. He has recently accepted full time employment with On Location Lighting as a project designer/manager.
Thomas Kendrick, BFA '02
Tommy finished his CCM career as Master Electrician for the Corbett opera “The Ballad of Baby Doe.“ Tommy recently did five days in Louisville, KY as lighting crew for “THUNDER over LOUISVILLE ”. He also recently completed a yearlong class in Intelegent Lighting design applications with special applications using the ETC Obsession and The Hole Hog II. Tommy has also just accepted full time employment with On Location Lighting as a production specialist.
Kenneth Friedhoff, BFA '02
As of Jan. 2003 ken is the master electrician for Circuit Playhouse Theatre in Memphis Tennessee. He is working on two shows called, “A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline”, and “Honk”. Kenneth finished his CCM career as Assistant Lighting Designer on the Corbett opera, “The Ballad of Baby Doe.”. Ken has been taking the Intelligent Lighting Design Applications class for the last year of his studies.
John “Zip” Zembinski
He is now designing a gig for the Rock Group, “Violent Femmes “ in California. He is presently based in San Diego and recently was a rigger for the Olympics in Salt Lake City. John studied BFA undergraduate lighting in Madison for two years, ’85-’87, spent several years in Cincinnati, moved to The LA area and has been rigging and doing video lighting applications ever since. He sends his best to all.
