Introduction to Stage Lighting
:
(3 Credits/Undergraduate) A basic survey of the materials, techniques, and strategies employed in the lighting of a stage production. Special attention to the discovery of light and its effect on the designer/audience. Practical experience on lighting crews for departmental productions is required.

Stage Lighting I:

(3 Credits/Undergraduate) A study of basic electricity and theatrical lighting equipment. Emphasis on the technical aspects of stage lighting, with an introduction to the principles of lighting design. Classes are accompanied by crew assignments. Prerequisite: Department majors and permission of instructor. Corequisite: 16-THPR-518, 519, 520

Stage Lighting II:

(3 Credits/Undergraduate) An introduction to the principles and techniques of stage lighting for drama, opera, and musical theatre productions. Emphasis on developing a design concept for the show, and on mastering basic design skills, including the choice of lighting angles and equipment, layout of area lighting, and selection of color for a show. Simple theoretical light plots augmented by lab work and design assignments for workshop and black box productions. Prerequisite: 16-THPR-207, 208, 209 and permission of instructor.

Stage Lighting III:

(3 Credits/Undergraduate) Advanced design course for BFA students majoring in theatrical lighting design. Concentration on theoretical and practical design projects for complex drama, opera, dance, and musical theatre productions. Weekly tutorial sessions and large scale productions. Prerequisite: 16-THPR-207, 208, 209 and 16-THPR-314, 315, 316

Stage Lighting Lab and Crew:

(2 Credits/Undergraduate/Graduate) Practical production crew work in the execution of the lighting design for major opera, musical theatre, and dramatic productions. May be repeated for credit.

Theatre Lighting Technology I:

Fall Quarter-Electrical Theory & Technology
(3 Credits/Graduate/Undergraduate) Fall quarter offers in depth exploration of lighting technology, with emphasis on current static equipment, dimming, power distribution and trouble shooting in a theatrical environment. Theatrical rigging, special effects, data distribution and low voltage wiring are also presented. Basic theatrical lighting console operation is also offered. Class requires permission of instructor: PI. (Faculty Head).

Moving Light Programming I:

Winter Quarter-Introduction to Intelligent Lighting
(3 Credits/Graduate/Undergraduate) Winter quarter offers training in analog and digital data, advanced data distribution, an introduction to typical features found in modern intelligent lighting and extensive guided programming time on high-end theatrical lighting consoles. Class requires 16 THPR 521-001 PR, and permission of instructor: PI. (Faculty Head).

Moving Light Programming II:

Spring Quarter-Advanced Intelligent Lighting Theory
(3 Credits/Graduate/Undergraduate) Spring quarter consists of advanced self-guided programming exercises on multiple high-end theatrical lighting consoles. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and creative approach to using lighting technology in various applications. Class requires 16 THPR 522-001, PR, and permission of instructor: PI. Vector Works for the Theater:

Basic exploration of CAD (Computer-aided drafting) software with emphasis on current use of basic functions, doing weekly projects requiring exploration and usage of all functions of the program. Topics include basic commands and concepts such as drawing and editing commands, geometric construction, and 2-D drawings.

Vector Works Advanced:

Advanced exploration of CAD (Computer-aided drafting) with emphasis on traditional theater graphics for lighting and sound. Expanded use of functions; weekly projects requiring exploration and usage of all program functions. Advanced 2D and 3B explorations will be studied, with application for stage light plots. CCM theater facilities will be the basis for projects. PI Required.

Digital Portfolios:

Basic exploration of this course with emphasis on digital theatre portfolios for designers and technicians. Current usage of Photoshop, Power Point, Adobe Suite 2, Dreamweaver, and web presentational techniques and functions. Weekly projects which require exploration and usage of all functions of the programs will be explored. PI Required.

Design/Research Project: Stage Lighting IV:

(3-6 Credits/Graduate) Culmination of MFA study resulting in actual lighting design for major theatrical production, as well as documentation of all research and a portfolio presentation of all associated paperwork, including written script analysis, design concept, cue synopsis, instrument schedules, hook-up and repatch sheets, stage lighting section, and front-of-house and backstage lighting plots. Final oral presentation and defense of the design concept and execution. Prerequisite: 16-THPR-814, 815, 816 and 16-THPR-821, 822, 823 and permission of instructor.

Stage Lighting IV:

(6 Credits/Graduate) Course designed for the second year MFA lighting design student with an emphasis on large scaled touring theatrical productions as well as USAA union exam preparation.

Theater Design and CO-OP:

Training in regional Theatres, Architectural Firms, and or Entertainment production houses for a minimum of 12 credit hours. All positions will be in lighting Design or Lighting Technology applications. PI Required.
